Hilton Head Island is sometimes referred to as the second largest barrier island on the Eastern Seaboard after Long Island. Technically, however, Hilton Head Island is only half a barrier island because the north end of the island is a sea island dating to the Pleistocene epoch - the Ice Age, from 2.6 M years ago up to 12,000 years ago - The south end of Hilton Head is the barrier island that appeared no further in the past than 12,000 years ago - the Holocene epoch.
The two halves of Hilton Head Island are separated by a nearly land-locked tidal marsh called Broad Creek A barrier island [Sea Pines Plantation and the rest of the South end] has terrain created by a dynamic beach system with offshore bars, pounding surf, and shifting beaches, with the characteristic grassy dunes behind the beach, and salt or tidal marshes [ Broad Creek] on the lee side, facing the mainland. The sea Island, by contrast, [Hilton Head Plantation, Indigo Run, Port Royal and the remainder of the North end] is defined as an island sheltered by a barrier island, and is not fully exposed to the full force of the ocean.
